The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

We love The Gruffalo. It was a favourite of Rachel’s and now is Jack’s favourite book too. At 3 he knows all the words and insists on reading along. But the Gruffalo is no longer just a book, it’s a complete brand. There is a film version, a theatre version and so much Gruffalo merchandising available, it’s almost unbelievable. Rachel and Jack own a Gruffalo soft toy and the mouse and Jack has numerous Gruffalo clothing items including some fab yellow wellies!

The hero is the little mouse who manages to fend off 3 predators by telling them about a made-up creature called the Gruffalo. But then when he thinks he is safe and can happily get his nut he runs into none other than an actual Gruffalo.

Who doesn’t know what the Gruffalo looks like – with his purple prickles and poisonous wart? Who hasn’t been on a search for a Gruffalo in the woods? Which nursery age child hasn’t worked on art projects about the Gruffalo?

When Rachel was just a tot in nursery, they made Gruffalo hand puppets and no doubt Jack will be heading to the Warwick Arts Centre this Christmas to see the theatre version with his Nursery class.

It is a fantastic book, with fantastic artwork to back up the cleverly rhyming story.

It has been around now for over 15 years and is as popular as ever amongst the toddler age-group.

If you have kids and haven’t read it, then where have you been?!
