Mum and Dad in Manhattan – day one!

Last weekend, hubby and I packed the kids off to their grandparents and we headed off for a few days in New York, just the two of us. We drove down to London early on the Saturday morning. James’ uncle and aunt, kindly said we could park at their house and took us to the airport. We flew with American Airlines and what a lovely airline! We had seatback tv’s with loads of movies, tv shows, music and games available. The food was pretty impressive for an airline!! And we had the whole row to ourselves so we could stretch out. I watched Saving Mr Banks – and highly recommend it, just maybe not on a plane full of people desperately trying not to cry!! We arrived at JFK mid afternoon. Queues at customs were ridiculously long and it took ages to get into the country! We took a rather cramped shuttle bus across the city in the torrential rain, but luckily we were the first to be dropped off.

Our hotel was next to Central Park, and we had amazing views of the city even in the pouring rain!IMG_20141212_214759

On the Sunday we did so much sightseeing! We left the hotel at 8am and got back again at 9pm!! We had New York Passes and they were brilliant – saving time and money and loads of the attractions. Firstly we journeyed downtown, seeing Times Square, Grand Central Station and a brief view of the Empire State Building. Once we got down to the bottom end of the island, we took the boat trip out to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Wow, what an amazing sight. Spectacular! And the skies were blue – don’t let it fool you though, it was blooming freezing!!

After seeing this amazing lady, we headed to another awe-inspiring, breath-taking and particularly moving place. We visited the 9/11 memorial.

I don’t think any words I could write, would do this place justice. I will never forget where I was and what I was doing on 9/11 – as will all my generation – and to see this place was just incredible.

Then we headed back to Times Square, intending to make our way to the Rockefeller Centre, but instead making a detour to watch “Les Miz”, as they call it, on Broadway!

Brilliant!

When we came out of the theatre, we also got to see Times Square at its best, as day had turned to night, and the square was all lit up, in all its glory!

We headed onwards to the Rockefeller centre and at 8.20pm we joined the crowds heading to the Top of the Rock to see New York at night from up on high. Pretty spectacular – especially as they had the Empire State building lit in Red, White and Blue, in honour of Kate and Wills who had arrived that evening.

Finally after an exhausting but brilliant day of sight seeing, we headed back to our hotel and bed. 🙂
