Looking for a fun day out with the kids in the West Midlands?
The Thinktank is Birmingham’s museum of science and technology and is a great day out for all the family.
We headed there over the May half term holiday to see what we could see. (in fairness the kids had been before with hubby, but it was my first time).
Entry is on the second floor in the Millenium Point building in the centre of Birmingham.
Adult price is £13, and children £9.50, but I got to make use of my NUS card (work does have its benefits!) to get the concessionary rate. We also paid an extra £4.50 for the three of us to go into the Planetarium.
We had a little look around the second floor before taking the lift down to the ground floor where we wanted to go and investigate the Science Garden.
The garden is full of interactive exhibits, which the children absolutely loved doing! These include a human hamster wheel and a number of water exhibits. Our favourites were the chairs you pull yourself up on, the wheelchairs, the hamster wheel and balancing balls on water jets.
After half an hour out here, I dragged them back inside to head up to the 3rd floor planetarium where we watched the 25 minute show with a presenter talking us through what we were looking at above us in the “sky”. This was really amazing to me and even my 5 year old enjoyed it!
By now we were hungry so we headed to the cafe. With the standard kids box meals @ £4.50 a go, lunch isn’t cheap, but they do have an indoor picnic area where you can sit to eat your own food (if you are more organised than I am!).
After lunch we had a look around the ground and first floors, checking out the spitfire and other vehicles.
We walked over the alligator skeleton, saw the triceratops skull, checked ourselves out in the thermal cameras and learnt about recycling and composting.
There was so much more to see and do that we could easily have spent another hour or two there investigating, but time was up.
We will definitely go back there again to see what else we can discover 🙂
A great day out in Birmingham!
